BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY MARCH 22, 2015

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord”. So we have come today to do just that. Welcome!

Earlier this year, Open Doors released its latest World Watch List (WWL). The annual list highlights the top 50 countries where Christians face the most persecution. This year, the threshold was higher for a country to be ranked on the list. This means that worldwide levels of persecution have risen, according to Open Doors, in analysis of the “significant trends” in 2014. Persecution higher worldwide, they said, “even in places where it has not been reported in the past.”

So while countries such as Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) fell significantly in rank on this year’s watch list (Sri Lanka dropped 15 spots to No. 44, and the UAE dropped 14 spots to No. 49), their level of persecution dropped only slightly from last year’s list (by four points and two points, respectively, on a 100-point scale). And while three countries—Bahrain, Morocco, and Niger—were removed from the list this year. The level of persecution in each of them remained virtually the same from 2013 to 2014.

However, throughout 2014 in general, pressure on Christians increased in 29 countries, decreased in 11, and remained stabled in 7. Three countries—Mexico, Turkey, and Azerbaijan—were added to the watch list this year.

Let us remember to pray for our brethren throughout the world who are suffering persecution. Pray that God would strengthen them and make them powerful witnesses for Him.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY MARCH 15, 2015

We give God praise for this another Sunday when we can assemble and enjoy the freedom of public worship.

A new study released at the 2015 National Religious broadcasters (NRB) convention, examines just who exactly engages with Christian books, radio, TV and movies. Christian media caters primarily to the Christian community. However, the study found that approximately one third of the audience for Christian media are non-Christians.

The biggest supporters of Christian media by demographics are African Americans. About a quarter of these frequently watch Christian Television, while only 8 percent of Asian Americans, 7 percent of whites and 3 percent of Hispanics do so. One-fifth of African Americans frequently listen to Christian radio programs and 9 percent say they frequently listen to Christian podcasts. Nearly one-quarter of African Americans frequently read Christian books; only 9 percent of white respondents, 8 percent of Asian American respondents, and 2 percent of Hispanic respondents said they do..

However, whites still comprise the biggest share of the Christian media audience by sheer numbers. Those who frequently or sometimes tune in to Christian TV or radio, are 58 percent; podcast 45 percent; book readership, 60 percent and Christian movies, 59 percent.

But remember, one third of the of the audience for Christian media are non-Christians. We need to pray earnestly that the Word of God they are hearing will reach them.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY MARCH 8, 2015

We give God praise and thanks for the privilege of coming together again with the most powerful body in the earth – the Church. May that power be manifested among us today.

Jewish Voice Ministries Intl., recently reported that there is growing hostility toward Jewish People and Israel in Europe. This trend is also spreading. For example, a shocking new survey in the United Kingdom revealed that the only country the British now dislike more than Israel is North Korea. The poll revealed that even Iran is viewed more favorably than Israel among British people.

And as has been the case elsewhere in Europe, anti-Israel sentiments and hatred of Jewish People tend to go hand in hand. Indeed, by the middle of 2014, British Jewish People had witnessed a 400 percent increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents compared to the previous year.

In South Africa, the news is even more appalling. The student government of the Durban University of Technology there and a campus organization called the Progressive Youth Alliance, recently called on the institution to expel Jewish students. The group organized a student strike in support of kicking all Jews out of the university. Those who opposed were threatened.

On the home front, current American Jewish college students have personally witnessed or experienced an anti-Semitic incident in the last academic year. So let us remember to pray for God’s chosen people amid this persecution. Pray that God would show up in a convincing way and defend His people.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY MARCH 1, 2015

“…Alleluia, for the Lord God omnipotent reigns.” (Rev. 19:6) We welcome you in the name of the Lord who alone reigns.

More than one week ago, a terrorist group with links to the Islamic State (ISIL) released a video, showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya. Shortly thereafter, Egypt and Libya launched warplanes in an air assault on Darna in eastern Libya, where the group is based.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, “This wanton killing of innocents is just the most recent of the many vicious acts perpetrated by ISIL-affiliated terrorists against the people of the region, including the murders of dozens of Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai, which only further galvanizes the international community to unite against ISIL.” All of the victims worked inside Libya, and terrorists kidnapped them in December. In the video, an English-speaking terrorist said, “Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for.”

Frank Wolf, a retired Virginia congressman said in a statement that Christians and other groups are on the “edge of extinction” due to terrorism, and policy-makers must do more. The video was captioned “A Message to the Nation of the Cross” (the Church).

Obviously this message from ISIS is intended to drive fear into God’s people everywhere. But “…God has not given to us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2Tim. 1:7). Also, Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Mt.16:18).

EXPECT GREAT THINGS

William Carey was an ordinary man with an extraordinary faith. Born into a working-class family in the 18th century, Carey made his living as a shoemaker. While crafting shoes, Carey read theology and journals of explorers. God used His Word and the stories of the discovery of new people groups to burden him for global evangelism. He went to India as a missionary, and not only did he do the work of an evangelist but he learned Indian dialects into which he translated the Word of God. Carey’s passion for missions is expressed by his words: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” Carey lived out this maxim, and thousands have been inspired to do missionary service by his example.
The Bible tells of many whose faith in God produced amazing results. Hebrews tells of those “who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouth of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong” ( Hebrews 11:33-34).
The list of heroes of the faith has grown through the ages, and we can be a part of that list. Because of God’s power and faithfulness, we can attempt great things for God and expect great things from God. –Dennis Fisher
When God is your partner, you can make your plans large!

“Que por fe conquistaron reinos, hicieron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, taparon bocas de leones, apagaron fuegos impetuosos, evitaron filo de espada, sacaron fuerzas de debilidad, se hicieron fuertes en batallas, pusieron en fuga ejércitos extranjeros. “
Hebreos 11:33-34 (RVR1960)

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY FEBRUARY 22, 2015

We give God praise and thanks for the beginning of another week. This is the week which the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Recently, I read in Christianity Today about the current conversation in Christian circles. It comes in the form of a question. How do we balance gospel proclamation and gospel demonstration?” Now, Gospel proclamation is our proclaiming the gospel clearly. People hear the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ and have the opportunity to respond by grace and through faith. On the other hand, Gospel demonstration is serving others in the name of Christ, showing His love when we act upon what we say we believe about Christ.

People have debated for the longest time the mission of the church, whether our mission is to speak truth, or show truth? I submit to you that the church’s mission includes both. We do not have a choice. Christians must be salt and light in a world that deeply needs that salt and light. These two metaphors speak to our living out the implications of the gospel and ultimately demonstrating that transformation which the gospel effects in our lives.

Throughout the Word of God we are constantly encouraged to serve those in need. But we are also urged to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. This is the balance that we must maintain as Christians.

JARS OF CLAY

When you buy a nice piece of jewelry, it is often tucked into a setting of black- or-dark-colored velvet. I think it’s designed that way so that your attention is immediately drawn to the beauty of the jewelry. If the packaging were highly decorated, it would compete with the beauty of the treasure.
It reminds me of Paul’s comments about the ministry of Jesus through us, when he said, “We have this treasure in jars of clay” (2 Cor. 4:7 NIV). It’s easy to forget that we are the packaging and His work is the treasure. So we adorn our jars of clay, taking credit for the things we do to serve Christ. We seek to bring glory to ourselves when we’ve forgiven someone, or shown mercy, or given generously. The problem is, when we start seeking affirmation and praise for good deeds, we compete with the brilliance of the treasure of God working through us.
When we do things for Christ, it’s not about us but about His glory. The less obvious we are, the more brilliant He becomes. Which is why, Paul says, the treasure has been put in jars of clay so that God would be the one to be glorified. Besides, since when are jars of clay significant? It’s what’s inside that counts! –Joe Stowell
Let the brilliance of the treasure of Christ shine through you
as you live for him.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2015

Once again we welcome you among the people of God here at FEA. “Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.”

Alabama Chief Justice, Roy Moore, is a strong opponent of gay marriage. In 2006, the state’s voters overwhelmingly voted against it. But a federal judge in Alabama struck down the ban, as judges have done recently in more than a dozen other states.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to put the ruling on hold. That means the state’s probate judges should have started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples since last Monday. However, many of those judges refused after Moore ordered them to continue following the rejected state ban. One judge stated that he was caught between the federal court order and Moore’s directive: “I want to uphold my oath, but what law do I follow?”

In the year 2003 when Judge Moore held the same position, he refused to remove a 2-ton granite monument of the Ten Commandments that he had installed in the state judicial building. He maintained his stand even after a federal appeals court ruled that what he did was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. He was subsequently labeled, the Ten Commandments chief justice. His defiance cost him his job. However Moore was reelected in 2012. And once again, here he is in the news taking his stand for God and right.

In this age of corruption, God is looking for men and women who he can trust to take a stand for Him regardless of the cost. May God bless Judge Moore and the state of Alabama.

SECOND BEST?

Leah must have laid awake all night thinking of the moment when her new husband would awaken. She knew that it was not her face he expected to see, but Rachel’s. Jacob had been a victim of deception, and when he realized that a “bait and switch” had occurred, he quickly made a new deal with Laban to claim the woman he had been promised (Gen. 29:25-37).
Have you ever felt insignificant or second-best? Leah felt that way. It’s seen in the names she chose for her first three sons (vv. 31-35). Reuben means “See, a Son”; Simeon means “Heard”; and Levi means “Attached.” Their names were all plays on words that indicated the lack of love she felt from Jacob. With each son’s birth, she desperately hoped she would move up in Jacob’s affections and earn his love. But slowly Leah’s attitude changed, and she named her fourth son Judah, which means “Praise” (v.35). Though she felt unloved by her husband, perhaps she now realized she was greatly loved by God.
We can never “earn” God love, because it’s not dependent on what we do. In truth, the Bible tells us that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). In God’s eyes, we are worth the best that heaven could offer-the gift of His precious Son. -Cindy Hess Kasper

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2015

Once again we welcome you to another worship experience here at FEA. May you leave encouraged and established.

When Bill de Blasio campaigned in 2013 to become mayor of New York City, he promised to reverse a highly contested city policy that prohibited churches from renting public schools for worship services. In response, religious voters helped de Blasio to conquer with 73 percent of the vote. But after de Blasio took office in January 2014, he didn’t make the change, even though it could be done executively.

Furthermore de Blasio’s administration filed a legal brief last month in opposition to the Bronx Household of Faith, who was the lead church in challenging the city’s petition. Blasio’s administration argued in favor of the city’s policy. “[It] does not involve any government-imposed prohibition, restraint, or burden on religious exercise,” the brief stated. The City brief argued its case using a somewhat obscure twist to a recent Supreme Court decision. This decision prohibited a town council in upstate New York from having mostly Christian clergy to offer opening prayers, because few other clergy of a different religion live in the area.” So said Tony Carnes, editor of A Journey Through NYC Religions. “The city said that the New York City public schools can prohibit worship services simply because all religions do not hold them.’

These are the things we hear about ever so often in the political arena – unfulfilled promises by political leaders. But the Scriptures warns us “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” (Psalms 118:8-9). Amen!

HEART ATTITUDE

I love watching the skill and passion of great athletes as they give their all on the field. It shows their love for the game. Conversely, when a long season is winding down and a team is already eliminated from any opportunity for championship or play-off-games, sometimes it seems that the players are merely “going through the motions”. Their lack of passion can be disappointing to fans who have paid to watch a good game.
Passion is a key aspect of our personal lives as well. Our heart attitude toward the Lord is revealed in how we serve Him. The apostle Paul said that our service includes the way we go about our daily work. In Ephesians 6:6-7, we read that we are to approach our work, “not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as the Lord, and not to men”.
For me, the key in that verse is “from the heart”. I have a heavenly Father who loves me deeply and sacrificed His Son for me. How can I do anything less than give my very best for Him? The passion to live for God that comes “from the heart” provides our best response to the One who has done so much for us. –Bill Crowder
The love of God motivates us to live for God.

No lo hagan sólo cuando los estén mirando, como los que quieren ganarse el favor humano, sino como esclavos de Cristo, haciendo de todo corazón la voluntad de Dios.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2015

Welcome to another worship experience here at FEA. May God’s manifested presence be yours today.

Just last week Israel witnessed another one of those miraculous coincidences that occur there ever so often. This happened when Israel attacked a Lebanon-bound convoy believed to be carrying missile-related supplies for the terrorist group Hezbollah. The convoy was located just across Israel’s Golan Heights border with Syria.

As it turned out, this convoy was carrying more than just missile equipment. It was also carrying a high-ranking Iranian general. Iran has confirmed that Iranian Revolutionary Guard, General Mohammed Allahdad, was killed along with a Hezbollah commander, in this attack on a Hezbollah convoy in the Syrian Golan Heights.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) had no idea that a high-ranking Iranian general was on board. An Israeli military source said, “we thought we were hitting an enemy field unit that was on it s way to launch an attack on Israel at the frontier fence.”
As it turned out, that convoy contained more than just missile equipment, it was also carrying a very high-ranking Iranian general. This man was not just another Iranian general. He was a ballistic missile expert, who was visiting Syria to assist in setting up a missile base near the border with Israel. He could have presented a very serious threat to the Israeli people had he been allowed to arrive safely to execute his plan.

We give God praise for His intervention in exposing and canceling the plan of the enemy against His chosen people. Let us remember to pray for the peace (wholeness and wellbeing) of Jerusalem. As we always remind you, there is a special promise to those who do so.

STORY TIME
As a child, I loved it when my mom read to me. I would sit on her lap and listen to every word. As she read, I examined the details of every picture and waited eagerly to hear what was on the next page.

Have you ever thought about the idea that our lives tell a story? In every situation good, bad, or indifferent people around us are watching and listening to the story we are telling. Our story is communicated not only through our words but also though our attitudes and actions as we respond to life’s buffetings and blessings. Our children and grandchildren, spouses, neighbors and coworkers can all observe the story we’re telling.

Paul reminds us that as followers of Jesus, our lives are like letters “known and read by all men: …an epistle of Christ…written not with ink but by the Spirit or the living God” (2 Cor. 3:2-3)

What is the story that those around us are reading through the letter of our lives? Stories of forgiveness? Compassion? Generosity? Patience? Love?

If you’ve experienced the joy of a grace-filled life that comes from the Spirit of God in you, then welcome to the joy of being one of God’s great storytellers! – Joy Stowell

Let your life tell the story of Christ’s love and mercy to the world around you.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JANUARY 25, 2015

Once again we welcome you to another worship experience here at FEA. May God meet you where you are.

Atlanta’s fire chief lost his job recently, after the mayor called his beliefs on homosexuality “inconsistent” with the work of the city. Kelvin Cochran was suspended for 30 days then fired, following complaints that he promoted antigay views in a Christian book which he published in 2013. Kevin was a 34 year veteran of various fire departments of the fire service. In 2009 he was President Obama’s pick for the nation’s fire administrator. He is also a deacon at a Southern Baptist mega church.

In his book, Kevin highlights his belief that sex was designed by God for a man and a woman. One year later, when the book came to the attention of city officials, Mayor Kasim Reed said he worried that Cochran’s positions in the book would lead to accusations of discrimination.

“I want to be clear, said the mayor, that the material in Chief Cochran’s book is not representative of my personal beliefs, and is inconsistent with the administration’s work to make Atlanta a more welcoming city for all citizens—regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, race, and religious beliefs,” he said.

Though Cochran stated he had prior permission to release the book, Reed said it was done without proper review and that Cochran violated the terms of his suspension by publicly defending his stance, according to reports from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This is nothing less than persecution. It is just what Jesus foretold would happen to us as believers. Let us keep Kelvin in our prayers while we brace ourselves for what is ahead.

LIKE JESUS

During a children’s church service, the teacher talked about the first of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Ex. 20:3). She suggested some ways for the kids to keep this command. She said, “Nothing should come before God—not candy, not schoolwork, not videogames.” She told them that putting God first meant that time with Him reading the Bible and praying should come before anything else.

An older child in the group responded with a thought-provoking question. She asked if being a Christian was about keeping rules or if instead God wanted to be involved in all areas of our life.

Sometimes we make the mistake of viewing the Bible as a list of rules. Certainly obeying God (John 14:21) and spending time with Him are important, but not because we need to be rule-keepers. Jesus and the Father had a loving relationship. When we have a relationship with God, we desire to spend time with Him and obey Him so we can become more like Jesus. John said, “He who abides in [Jesus] ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6). He’s the example we can follow.

When we want to understand how to love, or how to be humble, or how to have faith, or even how to set priorities, we can look at Jesus and follow His heart.—Anne Cetas

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JANUARY 18, 2015

Hallelujah! The Lord God Omnipotent reigns! It is a great joy to welcome you to the house of the Lord another Sunday. May God bless you richly today.

It appears that in many other parts of the world Christianity is waning. But in China, it is growing rapidly despite the many state restrictions. The rise in evangelical Protestantism in particular, driven both by people’s spiritual yearnings and needs, is taking place in nearly every part of that nation.
Western visitors who are accustomed to seeing empty sanctuaries in the United States and Europe are shocked at the Sunday gatherings held in convention center-sized buildings. There, people line up for blocks to attend one service after another. In Wenzhou, not far from Hangzhou, an estimated 1.2 million Protestants now exist in a city of 9 million people alone. (It is called “China’s Jerusalem.”) By one estimate, China will become the world’s largest Christian nation, at its current rate of growth, by 2030.

But there is also trouble brewing for believers in China. As evangelical Christianity grows rapidly, officials fear it could undermine their authority. Already, Christians may outnumber members of the Communist Party. In fact, Christianity now constitutes the largest civil gathering. This has far-reaching implications for the Chinese society and for a party that frowns on unofficial gatherings with different views.
In light of these facts, we need to be in fervent prayer for our brothers and sisters in China. Obviously the Devil does not like what is happening and will be trying his best to curtail it.
But we know the God we serve and the power He has. He said, “Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” (Jer. 33:11).

EYESWITNESS ACCOUNT

When the Day of Discovery television crew interviews people for a biography, we especially enjoy talking with those who knew the person whose life-story we are telling. Over the years, we’ve talked with a man who roomed with Eric Liddell in an internment camp in China; a woman who as a teenager lived in the home of C.S. Lewis during World War II; and man who chauffeured Dr. George Washington Carver on a speaking tour throughout the southern US. They all spoke freely and openly about the special person they knew.

When John, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples, was an old man, he wrote a letter in which his opening words established him as an eyewitness and close companion of Jesus: “The life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us” (1 John 1:2). His goals in writing were “that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (v.3) and “that your joy may be full” (v.4).

The eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ disciples help lead us to faith in Christ. Even though we have not seen Him as they did, we have believed. -David McCasland
