BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JANUARY 11, 2015

We give God praise and thanks for another day of worship, when we come together as we are commanded in His Word. We welcome you to our church.

God has said that this year, 2015, is the Year of Increase. According to the Webster Miriam Dictionary, the word increase means, “to become progressively greater, as in size, amount, number, or intensity.” God wants to increase you in every area of your life. He wants to multiply and expand you as His child.

In last week’s teaching, the Lord sought to sensitize us to the fact that it is His will for us to increase by means of the inheritance which he has for us. As we rise up and take possession of our inheritance we will surely begin to realize our increase. However, we need to be reminded as I pointed out in the teaching, that if we are going to take possession of our inheritance as individuals, there are four things which are absolutely necessary: (1) Drastic Alterations; (2) Divine Assurance; (3) Daily Alignment and (4) Decisive Action. With these things in place, we will possess our inheritance and experience increase.

Let us brace ourselves and go forward. The Lord is with us and we are sure to conquer. Amen!

MAKING IT RIGHT

It was a perfect day for our garage sale—bright and warm. People rummaged through clothing, paperbacks, and mismatched dishes. I noticed a young woman looking at a string of white beads. A few minutes later, the necklace vanished along with its admirer. I spotted her in the street, jogged the length of my driveway, and discovered the missing jewelry nestled in her palm. As we faced each other with the knowledge of what had happened, she volunteered to pay for the stolen item.

Zacchaeus, the tree-climbing tax collector, met Jesus and was changed. He vowed to repay four times the amount of money he had dishonestly taken from others (Luke 19:8). In those days, tax collectors frequently overcharged citizens and then pocketed the extra funds. Zacchaeus’ eagerness to pay back the money and to donate half of what he owned to the poor showed a significant change of heart. He had once been a taker, but after meeting Jesus he was determined to make restoration and be a giver.

Zacchaeus’ example can inspire us to make the same kind of change. When God reminds us about items we have taken, taxes left unpaid, or ways we have wronged others, we can honor Him by making it right.—Jennifer Benson Schuldt

A debt is never too old for an honest person to pay.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JANUARY 4, 2015

We gladly welcome all of you to the first worship experience here at FEA for the New Year. May God minister unto our hearts today.

We thank God for having helped us to cross over from the old year 2014 to the New Year 2015. Indeed this is unfamiliar territory to all of us. So I cannot help but recall the words of the leaders under Joshua to the children of Israel as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. They instructed them to keep a certain distance between themselves and the ark that they might know the way to go, “for you have not passed this way before.” (Josh. 3:4).
But even though this is unfamiliar territory, there is no need for us to be afraid. We have not received the spirit of bondage to fear, but the spirit of adoption by which we cry Abba Father. God is going before us as He went before His people Israel. Just as He guided and protected them, He will guide and protect us.

Let us hold our heads high and face this New Year boldly and with confidence. God has promised us that His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. You can be assured that this New Year is also included in that promise. But it is only as we believe God that His promises become a reality in our lives. Let us believe and prove Him in this 2015.

Have a productive and prosperous new year!

THE GOOD LIFE

Beauty, wealth, power, love, marriage, and pleasure are good things, but they’re not the best. The best is loving God and taking in His love—bringing Him glory and making Him our friend for life. That leads to the best possible life because it gives us satisfaction and joy now (John 10:10), and it’s what Christians are going to be doing forever.

That’s why we should make time for God and rest in His love—the love that made you and me. It is the reason for our existence and the means by which we will make the most of our lives.

I like the way the psalmist put it: “It is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works” (Ps. 73:28). In other words, the good life is drawing close to the One who loves us like no other.
And how can we “draw close” to Him? Here’s a practice I began many years ago: Take a few minutes every morning to read some verses from the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) and note what Jesus said or did. After all, He came to show us what God is like (Heb. 1:1-3). Put yourself in the story—in the place of the leper He healed with His loving touch, for example (Mark 1:40-45). Think about how much He loves you and then thank Him!—David Roper

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY DECEMBER 28, 2014

The Bible declares, “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised…” We welcome you who are gathered here in recognition of the greatness of our God. May His greatness be manifested among us today.
This is the last Sunday and the very last week of 2014. It is therefore time for sober reflection and serious consideration of the year. Reflection is defined as the act of reflecting as in casting back a light or heat, mirroring, or giving back or showing an image; the state of being reflected in this way.
When Moses came near to the Promised Land, he had Israel stop and reflect on the forty-year journey before any further advancement. They were to reflect on God’s guidance, His protection, His preservation and His provision. What was the reason for all of this? Moses wanted the people of God to develop an appreciation for the goodness of God to them individually and collectively.
As we approach the closing of this year, we too need to be reflective of God’s goodness to us. Like Israel, He guided us throughout 2014 through some very stringent circumstances; He protected us in times of danger; He preserved us both from and in some situations; and He provided food, clothing, shelter and everything else for us. So let us reflect and be appreciative of His goodness. Amen!

FAMILY STORIES

In her book The Shelter of Each Other, Mary Pipher gives advice on rebuilding troubled families. She explores how today’s children sometimes overuse TV and videogames to the exclusion of informal instruction received from extended family.

she gives an example of a family reunion where the youngsters are given a video to watch in the back room so the adults can talk undisturbed. Dr. Pipher believes this diversion actually deprives kids. Children need to mix with the older generation so they can hear the stories of aunts, uncles, grandparents, and parents. This helps them learn from those who have gone before them.

The Old Testament places a high value on children being taught their spiritual heritage. After God parted the waters of the Jordan River, Joshua was instructed to take 12 stones from the river to create a memorial for future generations. “When your children ask… ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off…And these stones shall be a memorial to the children of Israel forever” (Josh. 4:6-7).

We need spiritual interaction between generations. Remember, Bible stories are often family stories. And our children need them and us.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY DECEMBER 21, 2014

“This is the day which the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Ps.12:) May God be with us in a very special way today as we rejoice together in His name. Praise the Lord!
Thursday is Christmas day. This is the time when the church of Jesus Christ celebrates the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If Jesus had not been born He could not have suffered and died for our sins. We would not be able to rejoice in sins forgiven and iniquities pardoned.
As we look around at this time of the year, there are so many things distracting from the real reason for the season. Very little or no consideration is given to the fact of what it is really all about. But on the other hand we have to forgive those who promote these distractions because they really do not know any better. We are of God and are fully aware of the truth. Therefore we are responsible to promote that truth and not to allow ourselves to be swayed by those who do not know any better.
My prayer for us at this Christmas time is that God would help us as believers to position ourselves that He can use us to convey the truth to those who are in error and darkness; that we would be tools in his hand as the shepherds were on that first Christmas.

HAVE A CHRIST-CENTERED CHRISTMAS!

THE FORGOTTEN MAN

Amid all the Christmas activities, one man is often forgotten. No, I don’t mean the person whose birthday we’re celebrating. although we often fail to give Jesus first place as He deserves, we don’t usually forget Him. I’m talking about Joseph—the man God trusted so much that He placed His Son in his home to love and nurture. What a responsibility!

Joseph truly is the forgotten man in the Christmas story. Yet his task was an important component of God’s incredible plan. As we read the story of the birth of Jesus, we find that Joseph was just, righteous, merciful, protective, and courageous. But most of all—he was obedient. When the angel told him to take Mary as his wife, he obeyed (Matt. 1:24). and when the angel told him to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, he did (2:13-14).

just as Mary was carefully chosen to bear the Son of God, Joseph was deliberately chosen to provide for his young wife and the Christ-child. and trusting God, Joseph followed through on everything God asked him to do.

what is God asking of you today? are you willing to commit yourself to do whatever He wants you to do?

We can learn much about obedience from Joseph, the forgotten man of Christmas.—Cindy Hess Kasper

The proof of our love for God is our obedience to the commands of God.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY DECEMBER 14, 2014

Welcome to the FEA worship experience. May God minister to you as we worship Him together today.

Most of the news we hear concerning Arabs and Jews is bad most of the time. However A new generation of Arab and Jewish who are Christians met together very recently to strategize on how to win Israel for Jesus. Two hundred and sixty Messianic Jewish and Arab pastors, youth leaders, evangelists, Bible-school teachers and ministry leaders gathered for a three-day council to discuss, study, pray and work together to present the word of God effectively to Arabs and Jews throughout the whole Land of Israel.

These seasoned men and women of faith embody decades of labor proclaiming the Gospel to local Arabs and Jews. Most have given up everything to preach Messiah to their unbelieving Muslim and Jewish families and friends. Despised because of their faith, they have lost jobs, suffered rejection and endured multiple other hardships, yet their passion to bring the Gospel to their people remains fervent. “We will keep preaching and teaching the Word of God until it changes the people of Israel,” declared one leading pastor.

“We must be willing to suffer for the sake of the gospel and keep going no matter what happens. God will accomplish His will through the power of His word.”

The cowardly acts of terror and violence still raging in Jerusalem only serves to move them to stand even stronger together and compels them to more boldly declare the life-giving Word of God to both Muslim and Jew.

Let us keep these brethren in our prayers that the unity among them will continue and that they will succeed in their efforts to present Jesus to both Arabs and Jews.

Thank you to all those who supported the
Callaloo sale last Sunday for

PAY IT BACKWARD

Would you pay the bill for the people in the car behind you at a fast-food drive through—even if you didn’t know them?
that was the challenge given by a local Christian radio station to change their community. it was called “The Drive-Thru Difference.” the goal was to do a Christ-like act of kindness for people who didn’t expect it and to leave a note saying you did it because of your love for Christ.

Why do this? Why spend money for someone else’s food—especially someone we don’t know and who may be hostile to the faith? Why give without any hope of return? It sounds countercultural, but the idea has strong biblical basis.

Notice what Jesus said as He addressed a large crowd: “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who love you, what credit is that to you?” (Luke 6:32-33). Clearly, Jesus wants us to do good to people who can in no way pay us back.

Whether we’re paying someone’s bill at Taco Bell or dropping change into the Salvation Army kettle, our concern should be selfless giving—whether we get credit for it or not. In Jesus’ name, who can you bless today?—Dave Branon.

The motive of giving reveals the character of the giver more than the gift itself.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY DECEMBER 7, 2014

We greet and welcome you today in the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ the Son of the living God. Our prayer is that you would leave here empowered edified and encouraged

Whether we want to believe it or not, we are in the last month of the year 2014. It seems like it was just yesterday that that January began. Maybe you made some promise to God that you have not fulfilled as yet. Well you should seek to fulfill that promise now before it is too late. Just trust Him for the grace and strength to do whatever you must do.

On the other hand maybe you have been believing God for something or for His intervention in some matter in your life. Maybe you have trusted Him for a breakthrough of some sort. But it has just dawned upon you that you are in the eleventh hour and nothing has changed for you up until now. You are wondering within yourself if God has forgotten about you. You may even be in doubt about His love for you as a consequence.

Let me assure you of something in relation to God our heavenly Father. He is a covenant keeping God. He came through for Israel by the Red Sea in the eleventh hour and He will come through for you. I like the way someone put it: “God is seldom ever early, but He is never late either.”

CHANGED LANDSCAPES

I LOVE MY GARDEN. BUT LIVING IN THE MIDWESTERN US DURING WINTER REDUCES MY BEAUTIFUL GARDEN TO A FROZEN, SNOW-COVERED, BARREN LANDSCAPE.

IT WASN’T LIKE THAT IN EDEN. EDEN WAS A BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL GARDEN YEAR-ROUND. AND IT WAS IN THAT GARDEN THAT ADAM AND EVE BASKED IN THE STUNNING CREATION OF GOD AND THE JOY OF PERFECT HARMONY WITH HIM AND WITH EACH OTHER. UNTIL, THAT IS, SATAN ARRIVED ON THE SCENE, BRINGING WEEDS, THORNS, DESTRUCTION, AND DEATH.

YOU CAN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE LANDSCAPES IN GENESIS 1 AND MATTHEW 4. THE SAME TEMPTER, WHO ONCE ENTERED GOD’S GARDEN, NOW WELCOMES GOD TO HIS TURF—THE DANGEROUS, BARREN WILDERNESS.

THE WILDERNESS CAN BE A PICTURE OF WHAT THE WORLD—AND LIFE—BECOMES WHEN SATAN HAS HIS WAY. WITH ONE DECISIVE BLOW, THE JOY OF EDEN WAS REPLACED WITH BARRENNESS OF SHAME (GEN. 3). BUT JESUS WAS VICTORIOUS ON SATAN’S TURF! (MATT.4). IN THAT VICTORY HE GIVES US HOPE THAT WE TOO CAN HAVE VICTORY. A VICTORY THAT SHOES US THE ENEMY NO LONGER HOLDS SWAY. A VICTORY THAT ASSURES US THE DAY IS COMING WHEN WE WILL NO LONGER TOIL IN SATAN’S WILDERNESS BUT WILL BE USHERED INTO HEAVEN, WHERE THE JOY OF EDEN WILL BE OURS—FOREVER.

As you journey through the wilderness of temptation, Christ’s victory is yours.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2014

We are so happy to be gathered in the name of the Lord. He has promised to be in the midst of us when we are gathered in His name. So with opened hearts we welcome Him.

Because of recent news coverage of alleged illegal activity by pastors promising miracles, Kenya’s attorney general has banned new religious organizations from registering as the East African nation moves to enforce stricter regulations on churches and other religious organizations.

According to Kenya’s Standard Newspaper, Mark Kariuki, chairman of the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya, said that Muigai’s move to stop church registration and regulate churches, amounted to persecution, “We call on all Christians to support us and stand with us,” he said. “When it comes to matters of faith, people are willing to die for the faith and we will stand firm with the church.”

The government decision came after TV station KTN and Inside Story broadcast a “Prayer Predators” exposé of preacher Victor Kanyari, whom the station claimed had been making money from his followers by asking them for advance payment for prayers and miracles. Kanyari, who preaches at Salvation Healing Ministry, continues holding services but hired security to screen visiting journalists.

Kanyari admitted that he coached members of his church to give false testimonies, but said many people had been “healed and blessed in many ways” by his miracle ministry. He will be investigated for obtaining money by false pretenses, according to Kenya’s director of public prosecutions.

The Bible warns us to “Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravening wolves. You shall know them by their fruits.”(Mt. 7: 15-16).

A 45 YEAR OLD PROMISE

NOLA OCHS, A STUDENT AT FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY IN KANSAS, TOOK A BREAK FROM HER STUDIES RECENTLY TO CELEBRATE HER 95TH BIRTHDAY. SHE BEGAN ATTENDING COLLEGE AT FORT HAYS IN 1930 BUT DIDN’T GRADUATE. WHEN SHE REALIZED SHE WAS ONLY A FEW CREDITS AWAY FROM EARNING HER DEGREE, SHE RETURNED TO THE UNIVERSITY IN 2006. NOLA IS NOT GOING TO LET HER AGE PREVENT HER FROM HONORING A COMMITMENT OVER 76 YEARS AGO TO FINISH HER EDUCATION.

IN JOSHUA 14 WE READ THAT CALEB DID NOT ALLOW HIS ADVANCING AGE TO PREVENT HIM FROM BELIEVING THAT GOD WOULD HONOR HIS PROMISE GIVEN 45 YEARS EARLIER (VV.10-12). AS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SCOUTS SENT INTO THE PROMISED LAND, HE SAW LARGE CITIES INHABITED BY POWERFUL PEOPLE OF GREAT STATURE (NUM. 13: 28-33).

BUT CALEB WAS FAITHFUL TO GOD AND BELIEVED HE WOULD HELP THE ISRAELITES CONQUER THE LAND (14:6-9). AT 85 YEARS OF AGE, CALEB WAS STILL PHYSICALLY STRONG AND HIS FAITH UNWAVERING. HE TRUSTED THAT GOD WOULD HELP HIM TO CONQUER THE LAND, EVEN THOUGH IT STILL HAD GIANTS. SO JOSHUA BLESSED CALEB WITH HIS PORTION OF THE LAND, FULFILLING GOD’S 45-YEAR-OLD-PROMISE.

LIKE CALEB, WE MUST NOT ALLOW AGE , OUR PERSONAL GIANTS, OR YET-UNFULFILLED PROMISES TO PREVENT US FROM BELIEVING THAT GOD STILL HONORS HIS WORD TO US.—Marvin Williams

“O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good for His mercy endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy”(Ps. 107:1-2).

Thursday is Thanksgiving Day here in our nation. This day became an official Federal holiday in the US in 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.

But this was not the beginning of Thanksgiving Day here. Long before it became an official holiday, the English colonists whom we call Pilgrims celebrated days of thanksgiving to God as part of their religious observance. Our national Thanksgiving holiday really springs from the feast held in the autumn of 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag to celebrate the colony’s first successful harvest.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let this be our prayer: Lord I thank you for who you are. I thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ to be my Savior. Thank you for my family, my friends, my church, my occupation and all those whom you have surrounded me with so that I can develop and expand in my knowledge of you, In Jesus‘name. Amen!

HARVEST HOME

THE HYMN “COME YE THANKFUL PEOPLE, COME” IS OFTEN SUNG AT CHRISTIAN SERVICES OF THANKSGIVING. WRITTEN IN 1844 BY HENRY ALFORD, IT BEGINS WITH THANKS TO GOD FOR CROPS SAFELY GATHERED IN BEFORE WINTER. BUT IT IS MORE THAN GRATEFULNESS FOR THE BOUNTY OF THE LAND. THE HYMN ENDS BY FOCUSING ON GOD’S “HARVEST” OF HIS PEOPLE WHEN CHRIST RETURNS:

Even, so, Lord, quickly come
To Thy final harvest-home;
Gather Thou Thy people in
Free from sorrow, free from sin;
There, forever purifies,
In Thy presence to abide:
Come, with all Thine angels, come—
Raise the glorious harvest-home.

AS WE GIVE THANKS FOR MATERIAL NEEDS SUPPLIED, IT’S ESSENTIAL TO REMEMBER THAT OUR PLANS ARE UNCERTAIN AND OUR LIVES ARE A VAPOR THAT QUICKLY DISAPPEAR (JAMES 4:14). JAMES ENCOURAGES US TO BE LIKE A FARMER WAITING FOR HIS CROPS TO GROW AND MATURE. “YOU ALSO BE PATIENT. ESTABLISH YOUR HEARTS, FOR THE COMING OF THE LORD IS AT HAND” (5:8).

AS WE THANK GOD FOR HIS FAITHFUL PROVISION FOR OUR NEEDS, LET’S TURN OUR THOUGHTS TO THE PROMISED RETURN OF JESUS CHRIST. IN PATIENT EXPECTATION, WE LIVE FOR HIM AND LOOK FOR THE DAY WHEN HE WILL COME TO GATHER HIS GLORIOUS HARVEST HOME.

“But let the righteous be glad. Let them rejoice before God.” (Ps.68:3). As we the righteous are gathered here today, let us obey God’s word and be glad and rejoice. Hallelujah!

This summer, Pakistan higher court ruled that blasphemy law abuses should be reined in. However, in the most provocative incident very recently, since this ruling, a Christian couple named Shazad Masih and Shama Bibi, was beaten and burned to death following accusations that the wife, who was five months pregnant, had burned the Qur’an. These two were bonded laborers at a brick-making kiln. They lived in a small Punjab town named after the first Anglican missionary to Pakistan.

It is believed that the incident arose following a neighbor’s overreaction to Bibi disposing of her late father-in-law’s black magic amulets. “Shama never meant any disrespect to Islam as she was totally illiterate,” said her sister-in-law. She had no idea what the amulets contained,” said Parveen Bibi. “A few people recognized partially burned pages in the ash and raised a cry that Shama had burned the Qur’an.” The brick kiln’s owner then refused to let Bibi and Masih flee their village without paying their bonded loan.

The Muslim nation’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, quickly condemned the mob action as “an unacceptable crime.” He authorized the government of Punjab, Pakistan’s largest province and home to most of its blasphemy cases, to prosecute the couple’s killers.

Let us remember to pray for Christians in Pakistan and similar places. We have a freedom to worship God that they do not know. The word of God commands us to bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. Amen.

2,000 YEAR OLD SPROUT

IN JUNE OF 2006, ISRAELI DOCTORS AND SCIENTISTS SUCCESSFULLY GERMINATED A 2,000-YEAR-OLD DATE PALM SEED. FOUND AT THE HERODIAN FORTRESS OF MASADA ON THE WEST BANK OF THE DEAD SEA, THE SEED WAS TAGGED “METHUSELAH” FOR THE MAN WITH THE OLDEST RECORDED AGE ON THE BIBLE (GEN. 5:27). IN ADDITION TO THE CHALLENGE OF AWAKENING A LONG-DORMANT SEED, THE TEAM ALSO WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE TREE PRAISED IN SCRIPTURE FOR ITS SHADE, FOOD, BEAUTY, AND MEDICINAL QUALITIES.

THE DATE PALM HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE BIBLE. IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, THE TREE IS LINKED TO THE TEMPLE AND PRESENCE OF GOD. THE NEW TESTAMENT DESCRIBES EXCITED CROWDS PRAISING GOD AND THROWING PALM BRANCHES AT THE FEET OF JESUS AS HE RODE INTO JERUSALEM ON A DONKEY.

GOD’S PROMISE TO BLESS THE WORLD THROUGH A DESCENDANT OF ABRAHAM ALSO LAY DORMANT FOR 2,000 YEARS (SEE GEN. 12:1-3). FINALLY, THE SEED OF PROMISE SPROUTED. THAT SEED WAS JESUS, THE LONG-AWAITED MESSIAH. SOON THE STORY OF HIS RESURRECTED LIFE WOULD GO OUT TO EVERY NATION ON EARTH.

THE MIRACLE IS NOW OURS TO EXPERIENCE. TIME IS NOT A FACTOR. NEITHER IS THE BARREN GROUND OF CIRCUMSTANCE. ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT WE ALLOW OUR HEARTS TO BE THE SOUL IN WHICH CHRIST IS WELCOMED AND WORSHIPED.—Mart De Haan

God never makes a promise that He will not keep.

BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2014

We give God praise and thanks for this another day to glorify Him in the sanctuary together. “Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” (Ps. 133:1)

Tuesday November 4, 2014 is Election Day. For us here in this territory, it means electing a new governor along with senators and other officers. But what should be our approach to elections as believers? What should be foremost in our minds as this day draws near?

I submit to you that the thing that should occupy our minds most as this day approaches is the will and purpose of God for our territory regarding its leadership. The word of God tells us something which we need to take note of, “…God ruled in the kingdom of men and He appointeth over it whomsoever He will.” (Daniel 5:21).

God has not abandoned us in this territory to the whims and fancies of a few persons who would desire to have it so. But rather, He is very much involved in the affairs of this territory. He has a plan for this place and is seeking daily to bring His plan to bear upon this territory. But we, the people of God, must pray. So let us pray fervently and earnestly for this election that the persons whom God has chosen will be elected to office in Jesus name. Amen!

TWO KINGDOMS

IN A REPORT IN USA TODAY, RICK HAMPSON WROTE: “THE YOUNG GENERALLY DON’T HAVE THE OLD-TIME POLITICAL RELIGION. THEY LOOK AT VOTING AND SEE A QUAINT, IRRATIONAL ACT.” ONE GRADUATE WAS QUOTED AS SAYING, “I DON’T CARE ENOUGH TO CARE ABOUT WHY I DON’T CARE.” I WONDER IF THIS IS HOW WE AS JESUS-FOLLOWERS SOMETIMES VIEW OUR CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY!

THE INSIGHTS OF JESUS IN MATTHEW 22 HELPED HIS FOLLOWERS THINK CLEARLY ABOUT THEIR CIVIC DUTY IN THE WORLD. THE JEWS WERE REQUIRED TO PAY TAXES TO THE ROMAN GOVERNMENT. THEY HATED THIS TAXATION BECAUSE THE MONEY WENT DIRECTLY INTO CAESAR’S TREASURY, WHERE SOME OF IT SUPPORTED THE PAGAN TEMPLES AND DECADENT LIFESTYLE OF THE ROMAN ARISTOCRACY. THEY MAY HAVE QUESTIONED WHETHER THEY EVEN HAD A CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY TO CAESAR. JESUS REMINDED THEM, HOWEVER, THAT THEY HAD A DUAL CITIZENSHIP. THEY LIVED IN A WORLD WITH TWO KINGDOMS—CAESAR’S KINGDOM (HUMAN AUTHORITY) AND GODS KINGDOM (SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY).THEY HAD RESPONSIBILITIES TO BOTH, BUT THEIR GREATER RESPONSIBILITY WAS TO GOD AND HIS KINGDOM (ACTS 5:28-29).

AS FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST, WE ARE COMMANDED TO COOPERATE WITH OUR RULERS, BUT WE ARE CALLED TO GIVE GOD OUR ULTIMATE OBEDIENCE AND COMMITMENT.

Government has authority,
but God has ultimate authority.
