BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY, JULY 05, 2020

We welcome you to FEA, where we are overcoming through the power of the Word. May God bless you richly today.

At the second Continental Congress during the summer of 1776, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia was assigned the task of drafting The Declaration of Independence. This document is something that we the people of this great nation should all be grateful to God for. It was indeed a very radical document. This was evident in that it reflected a 180-degree change at the very core of societal attitudes in America at that time. The idea that farmers, merchants and lawyers could secede from a kingdom and fight and win a war against the king’s army was phenomenal. It was the end result of the multigenerational movement that was articulated in the declaration.

The two central values of the declaration are the origins of human liberty and the legitimacy of popular government. Jefferson made it abundantly clear that our humanity is a gift from God our creator and that He has endowed us with certain inalienable rights which we should hold dear. These include free speech, free association, freedom of religion, self-defense, privacy, and fairness, just to name a few.

The view that each individual possessed natural rights was not accepted by any government in 1776. All governments had rejected the idea and employed violence to suppress it. To the minds of those in government in the mid-18th century, the king was divine and therefore could do no wrong.  The parliament served not as the people’s representatives but rather to help the king raise revenue. Thomas Jefferson and his colleagues had no difficulty breaking away from this system. Unlike the French, who destroyed their monarchy, the American colonists seceded from theirs; and they did so embracing natural rights. The idea that each human being possesses inherent natural rights by virtue of one’s humanity is not just an academic argument. It has real-life consequences, which Jefferson recognized. This has helped to furnish us with the freedom and quality of life which we enjoy in this nation today.

As we celebrate another milestone in the existence of this great nation of ours, let us give God praise and thanks. There is absolutely

no doubt that He has a purpose for this nation. But in order for that purpose to be realized, we must make Him the Lord of our land. The Word of God says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…” (Ps. 33:12). Let us pray earnestly for our nation that God would be given His rightful place as Lord, so that His purpose can come to fruition in the midst of us. Amen!
