BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 20, 2021

We welcome you to FEA, where we are overcoming through the power of the Word. May God bless you richly today.

The most widely accepted story on the origin of Father’s Day comes from Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd, who grew up without a mother, was looking for a way to publicly recognize, thank and honor her father who had raised six children single-handedly. She brought the idea to her pastor and church members who embraced the idea and held the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1909. The day as it was established was well meaning, but it is impossible to improve on Scripture. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”(Ephesians 6:1-3). Because there is a link between honoring our parents and honoring God, we need to be aware of the unintended consequences of establishing this day to honor fathers. People tend to forget the history that led to the establishment of this day of honor and begin to act as if it is the only day that they should or need to honor their fathers.

It has been said that Father’s Day is just like Mother’s Day except you spend less on the gift! But putting all humor aside, it is very clear that society has sadly downplayed the importance of a father in the home. Too many children are being raised without their fathers in their lives. And too many fathers who are still in the same home with their children are not active enough in their families’ lives.  This is really a tragedy. A true father provides for the physical needs of his family. Besides the obvious food, clothing, and shelter, etc., children need time as well. The greatest physical thing a father can give to his children is himself. A true father provides for the spiritual direction of the family. Fathers need to take the spiritual lead and guide their families toward heaven.  A true father provides for the proper discipline of the family. There are many effective forms of discipline, and a true father knows that proper and timely discipline will yield the fruit of righteousness. He is, therefore, not hesitant to discipline. A true father provides sympathetic understanding to all the members of the family. Fathers need to express their love, communicate with, and show compassion to their children. This is something for which children yearn.

While we are thankful that our nation pauses on this day to recognize the blessing of fatherhood, let us remember that God expects us to honor fathers not just on Father’s Day, but every day of the year. We thank God for Christian fathers who take their God-given responsibility seriously; who heed the admonition in Ephesians 4:6, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” May God’s blessing be upon all the fathers today. Amen!”

Fathers are wonderful people

Too little understood,
And we do not sing their praises
As often as we should…
But FATHERS are just wonderful,
In a million different ways,
And they merit loving compliments
And accolade of praise,
For the only reason Dad aspires
To fortune and success
Is to make the family proud of him
And to bring them HAPPINESS…
And like our Heavenly Father,
He’s a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on
To be always on our side.
Happy Fathers Day
