According to Christian Headlines, about two weeks ago in Abuja, Nigeria,a young 18 year-old Christian student was stoned to death at a college she was attending. Deborah Emmanuel Yakubu, a 200-level student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was beaten, stoned to death and her body set on fire, residents of the area said. A video showing the attack reportedly appeared on social media shortly thereafter. In the video, an unidentified man was raging that he killed Deborah and set her body on fire.
Deborah was a member of the Evangelical Church Winning All, (ECWA) in her native town, Rijau County in Niger state. She was also the leader of the campus Christian fellowship’s female students. Deborah was falsely accused of blaspheming Muhammad by a young man who is a Muslim, and whose advances she rejected, said David Ayuba Azzaman, senior pastor at The King Worship Chapel and Ministries. Pastor Azzaman said he received information about the killing from Christians at the college in Sokoto.
“Deborah Emmanuel was complaining in a class WhatsApp group chat, kicking against how they discriminate against Christians in the school in areas of assignments and test in favor of the Muslims,” Pastor Azzaman told Morning Star News. “This is what they used as a yardstick to say she insulted Muhammad. Local media also reported that Deborah was also giving thanks to Jesus in the WhatsApp chat group for Him having helped her to pass her exams, when she was pressured to retract the statement and apologize, but refused to do so. A Muslim mob dragged Deborah from her hostel in the morning, stoned her to death and burned her corpse.
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, the Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, called on Christians to remain calm and for authorities to arrest and prosecute the killers. He said, “The only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authorities is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter their motivation, are punished according to the extant laws of our land.” Two students have been arrested in connection with the killing, according to the Sokoto State Police Command. Police spokesperson Ssnusi Abubakar said all those connected to the crime will be arrested.
We give God praise and thanks for young people like Deborah, who are willing to identify with Jesus, even in an environment where others are hostile towards Christians. The bottom line is that Deborah was brutally murdered publicly because she had acknowledging Jesus Christ and gave Him thanks for her academic success, when she was falsely accused and her life taken. But Jesus said, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Lk. 14:26). Let us make up our minds to identify with Jesus no matter what the cost, because it will pay off in the end.
