BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JULY 26, 2015

Today is Sunday, the day when the church of Jesus Christ gathers to worship.  We are glad that you are here with us.  May God bless you mightily today.

This past week, the Christian Post reported that Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, said that he was not sure that he had ever asked God to forgive him. Trump was fielding questions at the Family Leadership Summit on Saturday July 18, 2015. The moderator, Frank Luntz, asked Donald Trump if he had ever sought God’s forgiveness. Trump replied, “I’m not sure I have ever asked God’s forgiveness. I don’t bring God into that picture.” Donald Trump further said for clarification, “When I go to church and when I drink my little wine and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of forgiveness. I do that as often as I can because I feel cleansed. I say let’s go on and let’s make it right,” This response of Donald Trump, stated the Post, led some to question his alleged Christian faith.

Let me say that I fully concur with all those who have questioned Trump’s alleged Christian faith. How can someone claim to be a Christian, having never repented and sought forgiveness from Almighty God?  In addition, how can one associate drinking wine and eating crackers with forgiveness and cleansing. This is nothing short of blindness of heart and mockery.  But these are the last days and the Bible says that deception would be rampant in this time. However, Jesus said,” If a man will do His will, He shall know the doctrine…” (Jn. 7:17). If Donald Trump or any other person really desires to know the truth about God and forgiveness of sin they can  know and experience it for themselves. Amen!

ARROGANCE AND PRIDE

In The Screwtape Letters written by C. S. Lewis, a senior devil urges his young protégé to divert a Christian’s thoughts away from God and focus instead on the faults of the people around him at church.

During a Sunday service, I found myself distracted and somewhat annoyed by a person near me who sang loudly off key and was out of sync during the unison readings. But when we bowed our heads for a time of silent prayer, it struck me that the Lord must surely be more pleased with that other person’s heart than with the judgmental feelings He saw in mine.

A few days later I happened to read Proverbs 8 and was struck by verse 13: “Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” Throughout this chapter, wisdom calls to us to gain an understanding heart (v.5) and to find life and obtain favor from the Lord (v.35). The alternative is to go through life with a superior attitude while dying inside in the process (v.36).

Pride is a sword that wounds the person who uses it along with those against whom it is used. Arrogance robs us of all God longs to give us, but “by humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life” (22:4).                                                                        – David McCasland
