“I was glad when they said unto me; let us go into the house of the Lord.” Are you glad that you are here? Well, we are very glad.
The Santa Monica Observer recently reported that a 7-year –old student, who attends Desert Rose Elementary School, had been handing out Bible verses given to him in the form of short notes by his mother, Christina Zavala. The young boy distributed the Bible verses while standing on a public sidewalk outside the school premises. He also shared other Scripture verses and short Bible stories among his friends until a first grade teacher saw one of the notes. The teacher reportedly rebuked the boy publicly, then proceeded to call his parents and warned them that such actions were against the separation of church and state.
Nevertheless, in spite of the warning the 7-year-old boy was not deterred. He continued to distribute Bible verses at the school gate. But he and his parents were subsequently told by the school principal that their son’s actions were prohibited. Later that day, a Los Angeles deputy sheriff appeared at the family’s home to inform them that Desert Rose Elementary School had filed a report against the child for sharing Bible verses at school.
But the Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit litigation organization, which specializes in defending religious freedom, soon got involved. They sent a letter to the Palm Dale School District informing the administration of the correct interpretation of the clause which establishes the separation of church and state. They argued that pupils have the right to exercise freedom of speech even through printed materials. It was therefore improper, they concluded, to ban student discussion during lunchtime.
We are indeed living in difficult times. The devil is trying to force the church into silence. But thank God for those who refuse to be silent about the truth, even among our children. We also thank God for organizations like Liberty Council that are rising up in defense of God’s Word. In the book of Jude, verse 2, we are encouraged to “…earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints.” We cannot be frightened into confinement because of the voice of the enemy. We must resist and press ahead with the truth.
