BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY JULY 24, 2016

We welcome you to FEA in the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. May you receive your blessing from God today.

A recent study has revealed that women in America who attend church services once or more each week are five times less likely to commit suicide in contrast to those who never attend any religious service. The study which involved 89,708 women from age 30-55 years was published this past week in JAMA Psychiatry (a medical journal). Among the 89,708 women, 17,028 attended a worship service more than once a week, while 36,488 attended only once a week and 14,548 attended less than once per week. The remaining 21,644 never attended any church services. The study looked at associations between religious service attendance and suicide, from 1996 through June 2010, using data from the Nurses’ Health Study.

The study was led by Tyler J. Vander Weele at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This is the public health graduate school of Harvard University. According to Mr. Weele, “There were 36 suicide events during follow-up, with suicide incidents declining with increasing religious service attendance.”

The Nurses’ Health Study was conducted mostly among Catholic and protestant women. It had repeated measurements of religious service attendance and detailed information on dietary lifestyle, social, psychological and medical risk factors. It noted that suicide is among the 10 leading causes of death in the United States of America and the fourth leading cause of death from age 18-65 years. In addition, the study found that women who attended church services regularly were less likely to use antidepressants. They were also less likely to be current smokers and more likely to be married.

If nothing else, there is one thing that this study proves – Taking time to present ourselves for corporate worship is tremendously beneficial to those who do so. Even though the survey included only women, the benefits may well be the same for men. Not only is it beneficial spiritually, but also mentally, physically and socially. It also gives strong support to the admonition in Hebrews 10:25, that we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Amen!
