BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

We are happy to have you join us again today. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and to sing praises unto His name.

Praise the Lord! Law makers in Egypt voted on Tuesday in favor of a new law that would ease that country’s historic restrictions on church construction. More than 160 years ago, the Ottoman Caliphatic ordered that anyone who wanted to build a Christian church would have to receive the approval of the country’s ruler. At the time, it represented progress since for centuries building a church was a rare occurrence since it was not permitted under Islamic Sharia Law. This law was in place for nearly 80 years before some administrative regulations were introduced to make it even more difficult. Christians were required to gain the approval of local Muslims and to make sure that the proposed church was at least 340 feet from the nearest mosque. They also could not build near schools, village canals, railways, government offices, government facilities, or between residential areas.

Over the past 60 years, on an average scale, only two churches a year have been built. Egypt has a total of less than 2,600 churches. This works out to be about 1 for every 5,500 Egyptian Christians. (By comparison, there is about 1 mosque for every 620 Muslims in Egypt.) Christians end up meeting in overcrowded churches, in house basements, or in the premises of NGOs. But since these churches are not legal, they are vulnerable and have proved to be an easy target for Islamist extremists. In 2013, during Egypt’s civil unrest, 52 churches were destroyed, 12 were damaged and 29 people were killed, according to the U.S. State Department. In July of 2015, a mob firebombed a church in Alexandria and the police were very slow to respond. This summer a violent mob set on fire the homes of 80 Christians after they learned that one of the homes was to be used as a house church.

Under the new law, the church must apply to the local provincial governor for permission to construct a church building. The law also stipulates that the size of the structure must be in proportion to the number of Christians in the particular area, along with a few other directives. We give God praise for this victory for the church in Egypt and trust that it would result in a great harvest for the kingdom of God. Amen!
