BULLETIN FOR SUNDAY MAY 14, 2017

Greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! May your hearts be blessed and enriched today. And may the hearts of all the mothers be specially blessed.

In the year 1907, in a little town in Taylor County, West Virginia, a lady named Anna Jarvis began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. This special day would fall on the anniversary of her mother’s death. So on May 10, 1908, the day was observed in Philadelphia Pennsylvania where Anna had recently relocated. But it was not until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson made the official declaration to the nation that every second Sunday of May would be devoted to the honor of mothers.

Mother’s Day is a special day in which we take time to honor these special women who helped to make a difference in our lives. God created women as the ones to bear children. But, there is more that goes into being a mother than the biology aspect. There has to be nurturing, training and teaching of children. It is an awesome responsibility and must be celebrated for what it is.

God uses mothers to show us many important things about Himself. The unconditional love which He gave mothers for their children is probably the closest thing on earth to His incredible love for us. The gentle tenderness a mother expresses in handling her newborn baby is so reminiscent of the tender loving care God shows to us. The sincere sympathy which she demonstrates when her children’s knees are bruised and when their hearts are sorrowful, is like the compassion which God has for us. Also the sacrificial unselfishness which mothers show time and time again toward their children, reminds us of how benevolent God has been to us. The soft special kisses and the sweet smiles that they so generously give can help us to understand and appreciate the joy which God has designed for families in this earth and for His children forever.

In closing, let me share a true story with you. A group of men was once discussing different versions of the Bible. After they were finished giving their opinions of each version, one of the men who had been silent throughout, spoke and said, “The best version of the Bible is the one my mother lived.”

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MOTHERS!

A litany for Mothers

Eve our first mother – thank you for stepping out and being the first to understand the complexities of life.

Sarah, Hannah and Elizabeth – thank you for your patience and courage in waiting for a miracle. May all people longing for children be strengthened by your stories and comforted in their pain.

Hagar – thank you for your resolve in the face of exile. May all mothers who are forced to flee or are forgotten be given hope in you.

Rebecca – thank you for your flexibility. Let us remember all mothers who have to raise their children in a different country or far from their relatives and who feel isolated.

Rachel- you carried the burden of grief and wept for your children. Hold the hands of all those mothers who weep for their children – children who have gone missing, who have died or are lost to them in other ways.

Jochebed – you used wisdom and insight to protect your children. Give to all mothers this wisdom and insight in the bringing up of their children, especially in vulnerable times.

Naomi and Ruth – you showed that love can conquer all trials. Help all mothers to love constantly when life seems impossible and despair weighs hard upon their souls.

Mary- the new Eve whose dyes’ to God changed our world forever. Thank you for sheltering the Holy One all those years ago, for your faithful love and tender care of God’s most precious Son. May we never forget that in your giving is our greatest receiving of the gift of life wrapped in a manger and in a tomb. May we know the true cost of relationship by holding our faith in Christ deep within our hearts as you once held him deep within your womb. Amen
